TIA-942

A US telecommunications standard for data centre infrastructure, defining four rated levels (Rated 1–4) for power, cooling, cabling and architecture.

Unit: Rated 1–4

Full Definition

TIA-942 (Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard for Data Centres) is published by the Telecommunications Industry Association and defines requirements for data centre design including site location, architecture, electrical systems, mechanical systems and cabling. It uses a four-level rating system (Rated 1–4) broadly analogous to Uptime Institute Tiers I–IV, though the two are not identical.

TIA-942 Rated-4 requires fully fault-tolerant, concurrently maintainable infrastructure with no single point of failure — equivalent to Tier IV in concept. Third-party certification against TIA-942 is available from the TIA and approved certifying bodies. TIA-942 is widely referenced in North American and Asian markets, particularly in countries that follow US standards more closely than European ones.
