Uninterruptible Power Supply
UPSPower Train
The complete path from the grid connection through to the IT equipment, including transformers, switchgear, UPS, generators, busbars and PDUs.
Full Definition

The power train describes every component in the electrical path from the utility grid intake to the server power supply. A typical data centre power train runs: grid → HV intake transformer → MV switchgear → LV transformer → main LV switchboard → UPS → output distribution board → busbar trunking or cable → PDU → IEC outlet → server PSU.

Each stage introduces conversion losses, so the combined efficiency of the power train directly drives PUE. Understanding the full power train is essential for fault tracing, capacity planning, redundancy modelling and energy efficiency audits. Critical power consultancies such as PODTECH map the power train as a first step in any DCIM or BMS integration engagement.
