Diesel Rotary UPS

DRUPS

A rotary UPS that integrates a flywheel, diesel engine and generator into a single unit, eliminating static battery banks.

Unit: kVA / MW

Full Definition

A Diesel Rotary UPS (DRUPS) combines a flywheel energy store, diesel engine and synchronous generator in a single rotating machine. During normal operation, the flywheel stores kinetic energy and conditions the output. On mains loss, the flywheel bridges the gap while the diesel engine accelerates to speed — typically 2–3 seconds — after which the generator carries the full IT load.

DRUPS installations eliminate the need for large lead-acid or lithium battery banks, reducing floor loading, chemical handling requirements and battery replacement cycles. Capital cost is higher than static UPS plus genset arrangements, but total cost of ownership over 15–20 years is often competitive. Common in large colocation facilities and campus-scale deployments.
