Colocation

Colo

Service model where customers own their servers but rent space, power, and connectivity from a facility operator.

Full Definition

Colocation (colo) is a data centre service model where the operator provides the physical facility — power, cooling, physical security, and connectivity — while the customer installs, owns, and manages their own IT equipment. Customers lease space in rack, cage, or suite units. Unlike cloud computing, colocation gives direct physical access to hardware. Wholesale colocation deals are typically 1 MW+ to a single customer; retail colocation is sold in rack or kilowatt increments.
