Recovery Point Objective

RPO

Maximum acceptable age of data recoverable after a disruption — how much data loss is tolerable.

Full Definition

Recovery Point Objective (RPO) defines the maximum period for which data may be lost in a disruption. An RPO of zero requires synchronous replication to a standby site; an RPO of 24 hours means a daily backup is sufficient. RPO and RTO together shape the disaster recovery architecture. In regulated industries (finance, healthcare), RPO may be contractually mandated.
