Remote Direct Memory Access
RDMANVMe over Fabrics
A protocol extension that allows NVMe storage commands to be carried over a network fabric (InfiniBand, RoCE or Fibre Channel), providing remote storage with near-local latency.
Full Definition

NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) extends the NVMe storage protocol — developed for direct-attached PCIe SSDs — over a network fabric. It preserves NVMe's low-latency, high-queue-depth characteristics while allowing storage to be disaggregated from compute and shared across multiple hosts.

NVMe-oF is increasingly important in AI data centres, where training jobs require high-throughput access to large datasets and checkpoints. By decoupling storage from GPU servers, NVMe-oF enables flexible capacity scaling, storage pooling and high-availability configurations. TCP transport (NVMe/TCP) offers broad compatibility; RDMA transport (NVMe/RoCE, NVMe/IB) provides the lowest latency for performance-critical workloads.
