Power Usage Effectiveness
PUEISO 50001
The international standard for Energy Management Systems, requiring organisations to systematically improve energy performance through policy, objectives and monitoring.
Full Definition

ISO 50001 specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an Energy Management System (EnMS). Certified organisations must demonstrate systematic measurement of energy use and consumption, establish energy performance baselines and targets, and implement improvement programmes.

For data centres, ISO 50001 provides a framework for driving down PUE, WUE and CUE through structured management review rather than ad-hoc efficiency projects. It is increasingly required by enterprise customers as a condition of supply contracts and by governments as part of data centre energy efficiency regulations. The EU Energy Efficiency Directive and the UK's Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) framework both reference ISO 50001 as a compliance pathway.
