This announcement is coming just few weeks after Microsoft acquired Affirmed Networks, a fully virtualized, cloud-native mobile network solutions provider, having closed the transaction on April 23, 2020.
Metaswitch therefore, complements the existing network portfolio with its cloud-native communications software which will expand Microsoft’s range of offerings for the telecommunications industry, as Microsoft will be leveraging the expertise of Metaswitch and Affirmed Networks.
According to the tech giant, 5G offers significant potential for enterprises and governments and in turn creates new opportunities for operators such as advancements in mobile broadband, ultra-reliable low latency communications and massive machine-type communication to enable IoT at scale. Microsoft adds that 5G will give operators a path to accelerate service innovation and deliver faster with more resilience and security.

It was further announced that Microsoft plans to continue partnering with existing suppliers, emerging innovators and network equipment partners to share roadmaps and explore expanded opportunities to work together, including in the areas of radio access networks (RAN), next-generation core, virtualized services, orchestration and operations support system/business support system (OSS/BSS) modernization.
