In a continued effort to promote clean coal technologies, the U.S. Department of Energy has selected 12 projects aimed at reducing mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants. The projects’ overall focus is on field-testing advanced post-combustion mercury control technologies that achieve at least 90 percent mercury removal with a cost reduction of 50 percent or more. Other objectives center on field-testing in specific areas of need, and bench-scale through pilot-scale testing of novel mercury control technologies.
